Balance Transfer Credit Cards Information
There are many ways you can consolidate your credit card debt. Believe it or not, the easiest way is with another credit card. Credit card companies are recognizing that people are finding themselves with many different credit card balances, some with high rates. To help those consumers, credit card companies are offering cards with balance transfer offers.
Balance Transfer Cards offer you the opportunity to reduce your debt by consolidating it under one card and then making one payment. If you have more than one card that has a balance and are only making minimum monthly payments, your are spending much more money and taking a lot longer to pay off that debt. By consolidating them, one payment is going towards all your debt each month.
Many of these Balance Transfer Cards offer introductory rates, some as low as 0% financing for a limited time. If you get one of those cards and transfer your debt, you are now making interest free payments, so you are paying off your debt in a much faster time period than if you had been paying them off separately. If you are unable to pay off all your debt before the end of the promotional period, you may want to find a new credit card with another promotional period so that you may continue to take advantage of paying off the debt interest free.
Some do charge you a balance transfer fee, but its usually around 3% of the total being transfered. Other Balance Transfer Cards will transfer your debt at no charge.
Each company offers different rates that become effective after the promotional period, so be sure that you find a credit card that has a rate you are comfortable with. Some cards will also offer you reward programs so that you can earn cash back or other great rewards just for using their card. However, most of these rewards will not be earned from the transferred balances. You will have to use your card for purchases before you start earning rewards.
Like always, make sure you do your research and use our guide to help you find the credit card offers that work best for your situation.
